As business owners attempt to exit their businesses over the next ten years, our country faces a severe systemic problem; only 20% will ever sell.

The State of Owner Readiness

80%
80% of businesses owned by baby boomers will not sell over the next ten years.
83%
83% do not have a plan, or have not documented or communicated their plan.
67%
67% do not understand available options to exit their businesses.
If only 20% sell, what happens to the other 80%?
Only 2 out of 10 businesses will sell because of misguided assumptions about exit planning and selling their businesses. Many business owners do not have an exit plan, are unaware of exit strategies, and, most importantly, have not started the process even though it usually takes years to plan successfully.
Exiting your business is a major life event. After all, you probably plan well in advance for many of the important events in your life, and few are more important than the eventual transition of your life’s work.
You may not be ready to sell or transition your business today; most people aren’t. However, there may come a day when you’ll want to explore your options. When the day comes, you might be ready, but will your business be ready?
The SCOPE™ Institute provides education and literacy to prepare business owners for their eventual business transition, sale, or exit.
A nationwide nonprofit 501(c) educational entity helping business owners target solutions for a successful transition, sale, or exit.
"Although we are transitioning the business to our employees, SCOPE™ helped me understand the various ways to make this happen successfully, and that happened in our first meeting. Their ability to prepare us has been invaluable."
Mark Walker
Business Owner
"SCOPE™ helped us understand the critical time required to prepare a detailed plan to exit our business properly. Adopting a plan and process has already added value to our bottom line as we plan to sell in 2025."
Peter Mitchell
Business Owner
"SCOPE™ helped me put together our transition team, aligning us with various top professional
disciplines to ensure the successful transition of our business. Having a team of experts has already proven tremendous value and experience to our plan."
Tess Andersen
